Citizen Science
Citizen science is when a person who is not a scientist collects data for a project, and is the study of the world we live in by everyday people. By reading the book "Citizen Scientists" by Loree Griffin Burns, you can learn more about this topic. This book mentions how museums tag butterflies to track them during their migration. Citizens can help people out by finding these butterflies and reporting them to museums. This can be done by an ordinary citizen in the community. This wasn't done by a scientist, but a citizen scientist, and anybody can be one.
Citizen Science Experiments
1. The EarthEcho Water Challenge is a program all around the world that is from March to December. This program makes people aware by having them protect water resources during this time. Citizens do this by observing and taking care of bodies of water in their area. <http://www.worldwatermonitoringday.org/>
2. Mountain Watch is another citizen science program. Citizens part of this program will monitor the air and climate change. While walking on a trail citizens learn about air pollution, climate in the mountains, and more. These volunteers help scientists collect data on alpine ecosystem response, and climate changes. <http://www.outdoors.org/conservation/climate-energy/citizen-science.cfm>
3.Galaxy Zoo is a citizen science program where members can classify galaxies by looking at their shapes. Some of the first people to sign up get to see the galaxies through a telescope. Citizens that sign up for this program also learn how galaxies are formed before classifying. The first day their website launched, they were expecting to receive a very little amount of classifications of galaxies, but instead they were receiving about 70,000 classifications per hour. <https://www.galaxyzoo.org/>
